POSITANO
POSITANO Around 4.000 inhabitants live in Positano. This little town has a remarkable past, in fact the Ancient Romans had already chosen Spiaggia Grande and Fornillo as their favourite places for leisure activities. Luckily, today everyone can admire the towers that the guards would use in the past to catch sight of the Saracens that used to plunder the coasts. The guard monitoring from the first tower, which can be found in Punta Campanella (between Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast), gave the alarm to the others so that all the inhabitants could escape and take refuge. The pirates were not able to escape this vigilance system. The collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta in Positano is said to be one of the most beautiful and impressive churches in Italy. Montepertuso (literally “hole in the mountain”, translator’s note) and Nocelle are the most famous hamlets among visitors: legend has it that one day the Madonna made the hole in the rock with her forefinger and sank the devil into it. Every year thousands of travellers from all over the world head to Positano in order to visit the dramatic hole.
