BRUNELLO WINE TOUR Montalcino - Pienza - Montepulciano
Wine tasting & cheese tasting
The wine tours in the Brunello area, like the one in Chianti and Costa degli Etruschi comprise a tour of 2-3 estates and 1 or 2 towns among Montalcino, Pienza and Montepulciano.
Before reaching the heart of Val d’Orcia you will cross different very characteristic villages like Monteroni, Asciano, San Giovanni d’Asso (famous for truffles), Buonconvento (a walled town founded in 1100. Its fortune was that it was on the French way to Rome, therefore a crossway for many pilgrims who decided to stay for the night, hence the name Buonconvento – Good Convent). We advise seeing no more than 2 estates and perhaps have a light lunch at a third one.
Itinerary:
Departure from your hotel. Tout of the first estate where you go round the property, cellars and taste the wine, all with an explanation in your language. An estate worker will explain how the wine is produced, from harvest to bottling. Lastly, you will taste the wine they have told you about during the tour. The second stop is a tour of Montalcino or Pienza or Montepulciano depending on the route you are interested in. Probably you do not intend to see any town but only the local wine estates. If so, we go straight to the second wine estate, where we advise you to let us book you a light lunch so that you can taste their wine during a meal, clearly not before having seen the cellar and the property with a worker who will guide you through the tour. The third stop is the last wine cellar. Clearly we shall try to organise 3 different types of estates, where possible. Another option is to replace the tour of an estate with that of a cheese factory. Pienza is famous for its sheep’s milk cheese and in the area there are dairies that offer the opportunity of a tour and dairy product tasting. At the end of the day, you will probably be happy to have a driver to take you from one place to another and then home. In this area, called Val d’Orcia, there are hundreds of wine cellars, organised by the Brunello Consortium. This is an association that controls various producers to make sure they comply with all the rules to be able to give their wine the coveted DOCG label. Here are some of the estates selected in Montalcino and Montepulciano: Altesino, Fanti San Filippo, Poggio Antico, Cantina dei Barbi, Tenuta Silvia Nardi, Casanova di Neri, etc. With regard to cheese factories, in Pienza we collaborate with: Solp, Caseificio Cugusi, Fattoria Buca Nuova.
