SORRENTO
SORRENTO Sorrento has 16.600 inhabitants. It was founded by the Etruscans at 50 meters above the sea level. The best way to visit the town is starting from the main square, Piazza Torquato Tasso. It was built in the nineteenth century as the heart of the city and dedicated to the homonym writer who was born in Sorrento in 1544 (he is particularly famous for the heroic poem Jerusalem Delivered, translator’s note). Here visitors can gaze at the statue of Tasso and at the one of a blessing St. Anthony Abbot, the patron saint of the town. Near the square stands the beautiful Church of Santa Maria del Carmine. Since the square is built as a terrace, tourists are given a marvellous view over the seaport. An efficient hydrofoil service is available there for those who wish to reach Capri and Ischia. Otherwise, Piazza Tasso is the last stop of the Metrò del Mare. The most renowned hotel in Sorrento is called Excelsior Vittoria
