PITIGLIANO

PITIGLIANO
Its name is a blending of its founders’ names, Petilio and Celiano.Pitigliano dates back to 2300 BC, when it was built on a tuff drum beside the FioraRiver Valley. The Etruscans settled here in the 8th century BC, before the Romansreached the region. The Aldobrandeschi family ruled over the town until 1000, taking advantage of itsstrategic position on the road to Orvieto. Then, the town’s keys were taken by theOrsini family. In particular, Niccolò III enriched the borough with monuments andmasterworks by famous artists such as Baldassarre, San Gallo and Lari. He used tobring these works home as war trophies when he came back from the expeditionswith his troops of mercenaries. In 1600 Ferdinando I Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, conquered Pitigliano. Some years later the town gave shelter to the Jews. The typical white wine is called Bianco di Pitigliano and it is preserved in particulartuff stone cellars. Thanks to the presence of many Jews around the area, anotherimportant variety is the high quality Kosher wine from the Cantina Cooperativa diPitigliano.
